Creating
a country imbued with a scientific culture was Jawaharlal
Nehru's dream and immediately after independence he prepared a
grand design to achieve it. Among the temples of modern India
which he designed, was a centre of excellence in the medical
sciences. Nehru's dream was that such a centre would set the
pace for medical education and research in Southeast Asia , and
in this he had the wholehearted support of his Health Minister,
Rajkumari Amrit Kaur. The AIIMS was finally created in 1956,as
an autonomous institution through an Act of Parliament ,to serve
as a nucleus for nurturing excellence in all aspect of health
care. |

One of the most
spectacular pieces of Mughal Architecture is the Lal Quila or
the Red Fort. Built by the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan between
1638 and 1648, the Red Fort has walls extending up to 2 kilometers in
length. |

Humayun's tomb lies on the Mathura road near its crossing with
the Lodi Road. |

Qutub
Minar |
Historical
Construction Of A Landmark In 1199, Qutub-ud-Din raised the
Qutub Minar either as a victory tower or as a minaret to the
adjacent mosque.
From a base of 14.32m it tapers to 2.75m at a height of 72.5m
and a valid reason why it took two decades to complete this
monument.
It's a red sandstone tower covered with beautiful and striking
carvings and is inscribed with verses from the holy Quran. |

It was designed
by Edwin Lutyens In 1921. Its height is 42m. It commemorates the
70,000 Indian soldiers who lost their lives fighting for the
British Army during the First World War and bears the names of
more than 13,516 British and Indian soldiers killed in the
Northwestern Frontier in the Afghan war of 1919.
The foundation stone was laid by His Royal Highness, the Duke of
Connaught in 1921 and was designed by Edwin Lutyens. |

On 31st Jan.
1948, Mahatma Gandhi's last rites was performed here. The
memorial stone of Gandhi is square in shape made of black stone.
His last ward- 'Hey Ram' is inscribed on it. On every Friday
(the day of his death) a prayer is being held. Except Monday, a
regular feature of projecting Gandhi philosophy in picture,
sculpture and photos from 10-00 to 17-00 is being performed at
Rajghat. |

Jantar
Mantar |
A unique
structure raised in 1724, now lies in the heart of Delhi's
commercial centre near Connaught place. This is the Jantar
Mantar, one of several astronomical observatories raised by
Maharaja Jai Singh II of Jaipur.
The various abstract structures within the Jantar Mantar are, in
fact, instruments that were used for keeping track of celestial
bodies. |

Quila
(Old Fort) stands on the site where the ancient city of
Indraprashtha is believed to have existed.
Archeological evidences such as pottery dating back to 1000 BC,
found within the fort premises support the premise. |

Safdarjung's
Tomb |
It is located
near Safdarjung Airport, Delhi. Its area is 300-Sq-Metre & was
built in 1753-54. After the death of Aurangzeb, the only
significant structures raised were the Tomb of Safdarjung, who
was the prime minister of Delhi under Muhammad Shah.
Described as the "last flicker in the lamp of Mughal
architecture" it is clearly decadent in style. |

The palatial
building built on an area of 330 acres with a private garden
designed by the illustrious Lutyens, as the official residence
of the Viceroy of India during British reign, is now the
official residence of the First Citizen of India - its
President.
The imposing structure almost overshadows all other monuments

Tughluqabad

It was built by
Ghiyath-ud-din Tughluq & was founded in 1321-25. It is
historically known as 'Tughluqabad, Third City of Delhi'. It is
located at the east of the Qutub Minar.
The citadel frowns down ominously like some Gothic palace all
over the Qutub-Badarpur road and seems to prefer its splendid
isolation. |

The Akshardham
experience is an enlightening journey through India's glorious
art, values and contributions for the progress, happiness and
harmony of mankind. The grand, ancient-styled Swaminarayan
Akshardham complex was built in only five years through the
blessings of HDH Pramukh Swami Maharaj of the Bochasanwasi Shri.
Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) and the colossal
devotional efforts of 11,000 artisans and BAPS volunteers.

Jama
Masjid |
One of the
Architectural gift given by Shah Jahan, Jama Masjid is one of
the largest mosques not only in Delhi but in India. Completed in
1658 this Mosque has three gateways, Four angle towers and two
40 m high minarets. You can enter the mosque but take precaution
to take off your shoes and make sure that you are properly
dressed before entering. One can also go to the top of minarets.
From here you can have a bird's eye view of Delhi. |

The Bahá'í Temple |
The Bahá'í House
of Worship, New Delhi, India. Completed in 1986, the Bahá'í
temple is set amidst pools and gardens. Adherents of any faith
are free to visit the temple and pray or meditate silently
according to their own religion. The structure is in shape of a
lotus flower, thus it is often referred to as "lotus temple".
The view of the temple is spectacular before dusk when the
temple is floodlit. The Bahá'í Faith is the youngest of the
independent world religions and believes in the oneness of
mankind, the oneness of God and the oneness of all religions. |

Chattarpur

A complex of
temples called Chattarpur mandir is located beyond the Qutab
Minar in Mehrauli. Dedicated to Goddess Durga. Build in South
Indian style the temple complex is spread over a large area with
beautiful lawns and gardens. Though devotees visit these temples
through the year, during the navratras devotees come from near
and far. During the festivals there are special buses. |

Sahib Gurudwara |
A magnificent and
spacious bungalow in Delhi owned by Raja Jai Singh Amber (Jaipur)
who commanded great respect and honour in the court of Mughal
Emperor Aurangzeb now enjoys the status of a holy shrine called
Gurudwara Bangla Sahib. The eighth Guru Sri Harkishan had stayed
here for a few months as guest of Raja Jai Singh. Since then it
has become a place of pilgrimage for both, Hindus and Sikhs. |

Nizam-Ud-Din

The tomb of the
famous sufi saint Nizam-ud-din Auliya is built on the way from
Humayun's tomb. Inside the premises of the shrine is a tank
which is surrounded by many other tombs. It is said that there
was a controversy between the rulers of Tughlakabad and the
saint over building this tank. The saint had said that the city
of Tughlakabad will never flourish and so did it happen. |

This temple was
built over a six year period (1933 - 1939) and was opened by
Mahatma Gandhi. It was built in the 20th century by the Birla
family of industrialists known for its many other temples in
India.
The presiding deity here is Lakshmi Narayan (Vishnu). It is also
known as the Lakshmi Narayan. |

National Zoological Park |
National
Zoological Park or the Zoo of Delhi is one of the finest Zoos in

& birds from Africa, America, Australia and Asia. The Zoo was

Sir Edwin Lutyens
was the designer behind the building and the gardens. Lutyens'
original idea was to lay down two separate gardens, one for the
Viceroy and the other for the public. However, he ended up
designing the Mughal Garden for Lady Harding. The gardens
comprise three parts: the first is the 'Rectangular Garden'
immediately behind the main building. The second is the 'Long
Garden', which leads on to the third section - the 'Circular
Garden'. |

It is the first
amusement park of India, Appu Ghar is located in Pragati Maidan.
Inaugurated on 19th November, 1984, by the then Prime Minister,
Late Shri. Rajiv Gandhi, on the occasion of the birthday of Late
Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi.
Its timings are: Weekdays-1.30 pm to 9.30 pm and on Sunday- Noon
to 9.30 pm. |

'N' Food Village |
It was
established in 1993. It is located on the Old Delhi - Gurgaon
Highway 3 kilometers from the international airport. Its
attractions are: Mono Rail, Flying Carpet and Aqua Pool. The
water park here known as 'Village Club' has the longest water
slide in the country and 400 ft long water channel known as
'Lazy River'.
